Setup

Getting started

The six trackers and the dongle are packed in the docking station.

  1. Install the SlimeVR server

On the official SlimeVR download page, select Windows under Desktop and install the server. To install through Steam, choose the separate Steam option.

Desktop choices on the official SlimeVR download page

If you use SteamVR, please launch SteamVR once before installing the SlimeVR server.

  2. Connect the docking station to your PC

Connect the port on the back of the docking station to your PC with the supplied USB cable. The dongle sits in the narrow slot at the right end of the dock, and you can leave it there.

We recommend placing the docking station at least 1.5 m away from the PC case.

Setting up the SlimeVR server

The setup wizard opens when you first launch SlimeVR Server. Choose your language at the bottom right, then press Let's get set up!.

Let's get set up!

At What type of trackers are you connecting?, select Dongle-based Slime under Third-party or DIY Trackers.

Tracker type choices in the SlimeVR setup wizard

On Trackers using a dongle, press I connected all my trackers.

I connected all my trackers

In the confirmation dialog, press I have connected all my trackers on the right.

I have connected all my trackers
  1. Assign trackers to body parts

For a 6-point setup, select x6 Core Set. Then select each point on the body diagram and tap the corresponding tracker twice to assign it. Assign the chest, hip, both thighs and both ankles. You can also pick a tracker from the list.

If a tracker is missing from the list, hold its function button for two seconds, then release it.

    x6 Core Set
Select the white point for the body part. The chest point is marked here as an example.
  2. Set the mounting orientation

Put on the trackers, then select Automatic mounting. Stand upright, press Full Reset and hold the pose for three seconds; then take a ski pose, press Mounting Calibration and hold for another three seconds.

    Automatic mounting

On the next screen, press I have all my trackers on. Then use the two calibration buttons shown below in order.

    Full Reset
    Mounting Calibration

See Mounting Calibration for the ski pose.

  3. Check your height and proportions

On What is your height?, adjust the number to your actual height and select Continue and save. If your headset and controllers are connected, you can also calculate your height automatically. Fine tune body proportions later if the pose looks unnatural.

    Continue and save
  4. Enable SlimeVR in SteamVR

Start the SlimeVR server before you launch a game. The trackers reach SteamVR only while the server is running.

To avoid starting it by hand every time, open SteamVR settings, go to Startup/Shutdown and turn on SlimeVR under Manage Add-ons. SteamVR then starts the server with it.

Which body parts go to SteamVR is set per part under SteamVR in the SlimeVR settings.

If you cannot find the menu, start the SlimeVR server yourself, or leave it running and launch SteamVR afterwards.

Pairing again

Trackers bought as a set are already paired with the dongle. You only need the steps below if you bought an extra tracker or the pairing was lost.

  1. Hold the dongle button for 5 seconds

The blue indicator starts blinking once per second, which means pairing mode is active.

  2. Hold the tracker button for 5 seconds as well

Release once the red and blue indicators blink together twice. The blue indicator then blinks quickly while the tracker looks for the dongle.

  3. Check that it connected

On success the tracker lights red and blue together for 2 seconds, and the dongle blinks blue twice.

Repeat step 2 for each additional tracker. When you are finished, hold the dongle button for 5 seconds again to leave pairing mode.

Power

Charging and power

Charging

  • Charging starts when you seat a tracker in the docking station or plug in a USB-C cable.
  • While charging, the red indicator fades in and out continuously. This is normal.
  • When charging finishes, the blue indicator stays on faintly.
  • A full charge from empty takes about 2 hours.

Battery life

Used 2 to 3 hours a day, one charge lasts about 5 to 7 days. Left running continuously, it lasts up to 48 hours.* To check the remaining level, press the function button once.

* Measured in testing. The actual figure varies with how the product is used.

Power saving

A tracker goes into power saving when it has been left alone for a while. Moving it wakes it up, so leave the trackers in the dock instead of turning them off.

Turning off and on

Turning off is meant for travel or long storage.

  • To turn off, hold the function button for 2 seconds while the tracker is on, then release. Red blinks three times as it shuts down.
  • To turn on, hold the function button for 2 seconds and release. Blue blinks three times. A short press will not turn it on.
  • A tracker switched off with the button will not wake on movement. Hold the function button for 2 seconds again, or connect USB.
Charge once every 3 months during long storage

A battery left fully discharged for a long time may not accept a charge again.

Wearing

Where to wear them

The set is a 6-point configuration: one on the chest, one on the waist, one on each thigh and one on each ankle. With extra trackers and straps you can also run an 8-point or 10-point configuration.

Chest · 1 tracker · large strap

Middle or lower chest

Wear it on the middle or lower part of the chest with the tracker facing forward. Depending on your clothing and build, the back may be more comfortable.

Waist · 1 tracker · large strap

Navel height, above the hip bone

Wear it around navel height, above the hip bone. The tracker can face forward or to the side.

Check that the tracker moves with you when you bend forward.

Thighs · 2 trackers · medium straps

Thigh, just above the knee

Wear it on the thigh just above the knee, or a little higher depending on your build.

Check that the tracker follows the movement when you bend your knee. Avoid areas that change shape a lot as the muscle moves.

Ankles · 2 trackers · small straps

Outer side of the ankle

Wear it on the ankle. The direction does not matter, but the outer side works better than the front.

Feet · 2 trackers · 8-point and above

On top of the foot

Sit the tracker on top of the foot, with its top edge pointing towards the ankle and its front face towards the ceiling.

If you wear foot trackers, run Feet Calibration once.

Elbows · 2 trackers · 10-point

Just above the elbow

Wear it just above the elbow. Put it on the outer side or the back of the arm rather than the front, where the bicep is.

Attaching the tape

Stick one piece of hook-and-loop tape onto the whole underside of each tracker. You only do this once.

Putting them on

  1. Fasten the strap

Tighten it just enough that it will not slide down. If it is loose the movement can read wrong, or the tracker can slide off.

  2. Attach the tracker

Press it onto the strap. The exact position can vary a little, but it must be the same body part you assigned in the SlimeVR server.

Where possible, attaching to bare skin rather than over clothing slides less.

Reset

Resets

The SlimeVR server has three of these.

Full Reset

Press Full Reset in the server once when you start playing. Stand up straight with your legs about shoulder width apart, look forward and hold the pose until the on-screen countdown finishes.

Calibrate in VRChat

Do this right after the Full Reset countdown, while your trackers are aligned.

  1. Open Calibrate FBT from the Launch Pad

Open VRChat's Quick Menu, select the rocket shaped Launch Pad tab at the bottom, then press Calibrate FBT. This button appears in VR when body trackers are detected.

Calibrate FBT button on the VRChat Launch Pad
    VRChat official screenshot (2023)
  2. Match your avatar's pose

When your avatar spreads its arms into a T pose, hold your arms at the same angle. Place your feet about one foot width apart and match the on-screen foot markers to your real feet. Check that the hip tracker marker is near your waist or hips.

  3. Look forward and press both triggers

Stand upright, lift your head and look straight ahead. Press both controller Interact buttons (usually the triggers) at the same time. If you use arm trackers, line your arms up with the avatar's arms. If your feet sink into or float above the floor, check your VRChat user height and playspace height, then calibrate again.

Button location and calibration steps: VRChat Quick Menu · VRChat Full-Body Tracking

Yaw Reset

Use this when your body drifts sideways during play. Stand at attention so that all trackers face the same direction, then run it.

You do not have to be standing. As long as every tracker is aligned, a Yaw Reset also works while lying down or sitting in a chair.

Mounting Calibration

This works out which way each tracker is attached to your body. Take a ski pose and run it.

  • Go down without letting your knees spread outwards. Going down as if pressing your knees together gives a more accurate result.
  • Keep your heels on the floor.
  • Push your hips back so they are behind your feet.
  • Bring your arms back behind you.

Tap to run a reset

Tapping a tracker with your finger also runs a reset. It is on by default in the server.

  • Chest tracker, two taps — Yaw Reset
  • Left thigh tracker, three taps — Full Reset
  • Right thigh tracker, three taps — Mounting Calibration

Taps have to be within 0.6 seconds of each other, and they are ignored while you are moving.

If you are comfortable reaching your PC mid-game, turn this off

It fires by accident fairly often, and it tends not to register when you actually want it. Clicking the reset buttons on screen is faster and more reliable.

Open Settings and go to Gesture control to turn each one off or change the number of taps.

Gesture control in SlimeVR settings

Feet Calibration

If you put trackers on your feet, set the foot direction once before you play.

Hold the same pose as a Full Reset and stand on your toes with your heels lifted.

If it keeps rotating while you stand still

Put the tracker on a flat surface for a moment. It re-establishes its reference while at rest. The drift that already happened has to be corrected separately with a Yaw Reset.

Firmware

Firmware updates

With the dongle connected to your PC, the trackers are updated wirelessly as well.

Updating wirelessly

  1. Connect the dongle to your PC

Leave the dongle in the docking station and check that the trackers are powered on.

  2. Open the update page

In Chrome or Edge, go to bbforest.net/en/tracker/ota.

  3. Start the update

The connected devices and their current versions are listed. Press the update button if anything needs updating. Progress is shown on screen.

The update finishes faster with the trackers seated in the docking station.

The browser method works in Chrome and Edge based browsers only.

Updating over USB

Use this when the wireless update does not work. It cannot be done through the docking station, so connect the device directly to your PC.

  1. Connect the cable

Connect the tracker or the dongle directly to your PC with a USB cable.

  2. Hold the function button for 8 seconds

On a tracker, release once red and blue blink together three times. On the dongle, release once the blue indicator starts blinking quickly.

  3. Copy the update file

A drive named EKE_Tracker or EKE_Dongle appears on your PC. Drag the update file, which has a .eke extension, onto that drive and the device restarts by itself.

Updating keeps your pairing and settings

Do not unplug the cable while an update is running. If you entered update mode by mistake, hold the function button for 2 seconds to leave it.

Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting

Tap the symptom that matches.

It will not turn on

Check that you held the function button for a full 2 seconds. A short press does nothing. If it still will not start, charge it for about 15 minutes and try again.

The tracker does not appear in the server

First check that the dongle is connected and the SlimeVR server is running. If the tracker is on but still does not appear, run pairing again.

The blue indicator blinks once every 2 seconds

The tracker cannot find the dongle. Check that the dongle is connected and the server is running, then turn the tracker on in the same room. After 5 minutes the light stops, but the tracker keeps trying to connect.

Red and blue blink together with a 3 second pause

This is a fault indication. Count how many times they blink. Once means the sensor, twice means power or battery.

If the pattern is gone after a power cycle, you can keep using the tracker. If it keeps repeating, contact us and tell us the number of blinks.

My movement keeps drifting

Stand at attention and run a Yaw Reset. A loose strap causes the same symptom.

If it rotates even while you stand still, put the tracker on a flat surface for a moment. It re-establishes its reference while at rest. See Resets.

One particular tracker keeps dropping out

This is usually the radio conditions at that spot. Move the docking station away from the PC case and place it closer to body height rather than the floor.

Tightening the strap so the tracker sits against your body also helps.

It does not respond at all

Hold the function button for 15 seconds to force a restart. Pairing information and settings are not erased. For the dongle, unplug it from USB and plug it back in.

It is not charging

Try a different cable and power source. If you are using the docking station, check that the tracker is seated all the way down. The red indicator starts fading in and out once it makes contact.

The battery drains quickly

Left in a bag without being turned off, a tracker wakes up every time it is jostled and uses power. Hold the function button for 2 seconds to turn it off when you will not be using it.

If your symptom is not listed

Tell us on our Discord channel, with the symptom and how the indicator blinks.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to set up a router or Wi-Fi?

No. The trackers and the dongle talk to each other directly over a dedicated 2.4 GHz link.

Can I use it without a PC?

The setup described here assumes a PC running the SlimeVR server. We are looking into a method that does not need a PC and will post it here once it works.

Do I need to pair again on another PC?

Just move the dongle over. You only need to install the SlimeVR server on the new PC.

Which charger should I use?

Use a PC USB port or an ordinary 5 V USB charger. Do not use a fast charger. A charger is not included in the box.

Is it alright if it gets wet with sweat?

The product is not waterproof. Wipe it with a dry cloth if it gets wet. Wash the straps by hand after removing the trackers, and never wash them with the trackers still attached.

The indicator bothers me in a dark room

The red light that signals normal operation only appears for the first 3 minutes after power-on and then stops. If it keeps blinking, the tracker is charging or the battery is low.

Do I have to update the firmware?

The product works without updating. Checking about once a month is worthwhile.

Can the battery be replaced?

Please do not open the product yourself. If the battery life has become noticeably shorter, please contact us for service.

Can I take it on a plane?

Each tracker contains a 100 mAh lithium polymer battery. Carry-on is allowed, but do not put it in checked baggage. Please check the rules of the airline you are flying with.

You may reproduce and distribute copies of the Work or Derivative Works thereof in any medium, with or without modifications, and in Source or Object form, provided that You meet the following conditions: (a) You must give any other recipients of the Work or Derivative Works a copy of this License; and (b) You must cause any modified files to carry prominent notices stating that You changed the files; and (c) You must retain, in the Source form of any Derivative Works that You distribute, all copyright, patent, trademark, and attribution notices from the Source form of the Work, excluding those notices that do not pertain to any part of the Derivative Works; and (d) If the Work includes a "NOTICE" text file as part of its distribution, then any Derivative Works that You distribute must include a readable copy of the attribution notices contained within such NOTICE file, excluding those notices that do not pertain to any part of the Derivative Works, in at least one of the following places: within a NOTICE text file distributed as part of the Derivative Works; within the Source form or documentation, if provided along with the Derivative Works; or, within a display generated by the Derivative Works, if and wherever such third-party notices normally appear. The contents of the NOTICE file are for informational purposes only and do not modify the License. You may add Your own attribution notices within Derivative Works that You distribute, alongside or as an addendum to the NOTICE text from the Work, provided that such additional attribution notices cannot be construed as modifying the License. You may add Your own copyright statement to Your modifications and may provide additional or different license terms and conditions for use, reproduction, or distribution of Your modifications, or for any such Derivative Works as a whole, provided Your use, reproduction, and distribution of the Work otherwise complies with the conditions stated in this License. 5. Submission of Contributions. Unless You explicitly state otherwise, any Contribution intentionally submitted for inclusion in the Work by You to the Licensor shall be under the terms and conditions of this License, without any additional terms or conditions. Notwithstanding the above, nothing herein shall supersede or modify the terms of any separate license agreement you may have executed with Licensor regarding such Contributions. 6. Trademarks. This License does not grant permission to use the trade names, trademarks, service marks, or product names of the Licensor, except as required for reasonable and customary use in describing the origin of the Work and reproducing the content of the NOTICE file. 7. Disclaimer of Warranty. Unless required by applicable law or agreed to in writing, Licensor provides the Work (and each Contributor provides its Contributions) on an "AS IS" BASIS, WITHOUT WARRANTIES OR CONDITIONS OF ANY KIND, either express or implied, including, without limitation, any warranties or conditions of TITLE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, MERCHANTABILITY, or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. You are solely responsible for determining the appropriateness of using or redistributing the Work and assume any risks associated with Your exercise of permissions under this License. 8. Limitation of Liability. In no event and under no legal theory, whether in tort (including negligence), contract, or otherwise, unless required by applicable law (such as deliberate and grossly negligent acts) or agreed to in writing, shall any Contributor be liable to You for damages, including any direct, indirect, special, incidental, or consequential damages of any character arising as a result of this License or out of the use or inability to use the Work (including but not limited to damages for loss of goodwill, work stoppage, computer failure or malfunction, or any and all other commercial damages or losses), even if such Contributor has been advised of the possibility of such damages. 9. Accepting Warranty or Additional Liability. While redistributing the Work or Derivative Works thereof, You may choose to offer, and charge a fee for, acceptance of support, warranty, indemnity, or other liability obligations and/or rights consistent with this License. However, in accepting such obligations, You may act only on Your own behalf and on Your sole responsibility, not on behalf of any other Contributor, and only if You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold each Contributor harmless for any liability incurred by, or claims asserted against, such Contributor by reason of your accepting any such warranty or additional liability. END OF TERMS AND CONDITIONS APPENDIX: How to apply the Apache License to your work. To apply the Apache License to your work, attach the following boilerplate notice, with the fields enclosed by brackets "{}" replaced with your own identifying information. (Don't include the brackets!) The text should be enclosed in the appropriate comment syntax for the file format. We also recommend that a file or class name and description of purpose be included on the same "printed page" as the copyright notice for easier identification within third-party archives. Copyright (c) 2023, 길형진 (https://github.com/orioncactus/pretendard) Copyright (c) 2019, eBay Korea Co., Ltd. (www.gmarket.co.kr), with Reserved Font Name "Gmarket Sans Font". Copyright (c) 2014-2021 Adobe (http://www.adobe.com/). This Font Software is licensed under the SIL Open Font License, Version 1.1. This license is copied below, and is also available with a FAQ at: https://openfontlicense.org ----------------------------------------------------------- SIL OPEN FONT LICENSE Version 1.1 - 26 February 2007 ----------------------------------------------------------- PREAMBLE The goals of the Open Font License (OFL) are to stimulate worldwide development of collaborative font projects, to support the font creation efforts of academic and linguistic communities, and to provide a free and open framework in which fonts may be shared and improved in partnership with others. The OFL allows the licensed fonts to be used, studied, modified and redistributed freely as long as they are not sold by themselves. The fonts, including any derivative works, can be bundled, embedded, redistributed and/or sold with any software provided that any reserved names are not used by derivative works. The fonts and derivatives, however, cannot be released under any other type of license. The requirement for fonts to remain under this license does not apply to any document created using the fonts or their derivatives. DEFINITIONS "Font Software" refers to the set of files released by the Copyright Holder(s) under this license and clearly marked as such. This may include source files, build scripts and documentation. "Reserved Font Name" refers to any names specified as such after the copyright statement(s). "Original Version" refers to the collection of Font Software components as distributed by the Copyright Holder(s). "Modified Version" refers to any derivative made by adding to, deleting, or substituting -- in part or in whole -- any of the components of the Original Version, by changing formats or by porting the Font Software to a new environment. "Author" refers to any designer, engineer, programmer, technical writer or other person who contributed to the Font Software. PERMISSION & CONDITIONS Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a copy of the Font Software, to use, study, copy, merge, embed, modify, redistribute, and sell modified and unmodified copies of the Font Software, subject to the following conditions: 1) Neither the Font Software nor any of its individual components, in Original or Modified Versions, may be sold by itself. 2) Original or Modified Versions of the Font Software may be bundled, redistributed and/or sold with any software, provided that each copy contains the above copyright notice and this license. These can be included either as stand-alone text files, human-readable headers or in the appropriate machine-readable metadata fields within text or binary files as long as those fields can be easily viewed by the user. 3) No Modified Version of the Font Software may use the Reserved Font Name(s) unless explicit written permission is granted by the corresponding Copyright Holder. This restriction only applies to the primary font name as presented to the users. 4) The name(s) of the Copyright Holder(s) or the Author(s) of the Font Software shall not be used to promote, endorse or advertise any Modified Version, except to acknowledge the contribution(s) of the Copyright Holder(s) and the Author(s) or with their explicit written permission. 5) The Font Software, modified or unmodified, in part or in whole, must be distributed entirely under this license, and must not be distributed under any other license. The requirement for fonts to remain under this license does not apply to any document created using the Font Software. TERMINATION This license becomes null and void if any of the above conditions are not met. DISCLAIMER THE FONT SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO ANY WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NONINFRINGEMENT OF COPYRIGHT, PATENT, TRADEMARK, OR OTHER RIGHT. IN NO EVENT SHALL THE COPYRIGHT HOLDER BE LIABLE FOR ANY CLAIM, DAMAGES OR OTHER LIABILITY, INCLUDING ANY GENERAL, SPECIAL, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, WHETHER IN AN ACTION OF CONTRACT, TORT OR OTHERWISE, ARISING FROM, OUT OF THE USE OR INABILITY TO USE THE FONT SOFTWARE OR FROM OTHER DEALINGS IN THE FONT SOFTWARE.
